Five Steps to Great Winter Skin

Thursday, January 25th, 2018

Are you feeling the effects of winter on your skin? Our esthetician Jen offers the following helpful tips to make your skin both look and feel better this season:

  1. Drink up. Keeping your body hydrated during the winter is super important. 6-8 glasses of water per day.
  2. Try to stick with lukewarm water in your shower or bath. Hot water can take the natural oils out of your skin and make you feel even dryer.
  3. Take extra care of your face and body. Stay away from harsh soaps and try using a gentle cleanser or cleansing cream. Exfoliation once a week is good but over exfoliation can strip the skin. Apply a balm or moisturizing oil to the skin before bed. Stick to a lotion during the day as it absorbs better into the skin before applying clothing.
  4. Don’t forget about your lips.  The lips hold in less moisture than the rest of your body. Try using a lip moisturizer like, Babylips, Burt’s Bees, or Elta UV Lip Moisturizer. If lips are extremely dry try brushing them lightly with an old toothbrush to remove dead skin buildup.
  5. Using a humidifier in your bedroom or sitting area can add extra moisture which can benefit not only your skin, but overall dryness to sinuses and the rest of the body.

Easing the Sting of Winter Skin

Have you been keeping warm in these freezing temperatures? Here at the offices of Dr. Leo McCafferty, we understand how dropping temps and arctic blasts can really zap the moisture from your skin. But by using these five steps, you can help alleviate winter’s harsh effects on your delicate skin:

  1. Drink a lot of water. Keeping your body hydrated during the winter is very important. Six to eight glasses of water per day is what the average person needs.
  2. Try to stick with lukewarm water in your shower and bath. Hot water can take the natural oils out of your skin and make you feel even drier.
  3. Take extra care of your face and body during this time. Stay away from harsh soaps and, instead, use a gentle cleanser or cleansing cream. Exfoliate once a week, but remember: over-exfoliation can strip the skin. Apply a balm or moisturizing oil to the skin before bed. For daytime, before you get dressed, choose lotion instead of balm or oil. This absorbs better into the skin and won’t harm your clothes.
  4. Don’t forget about your lips. Lips need moisture, too, and they retain less moisture than the rest of your body. So switch to a lip moisturizer like Babylips, Burt’s Bees, Elta Lip Moisturizer, or Vaseline. If your lips are extremely dry, try brushing them lightly once a week  with an old toothbrush, before you apply your lip moisturizer. This helps removes dead skin build-up.
  5. Use a humidifier in your bedroom or sitting area to add extra moisture. This benefits not only your skin, but reduces dryness in the sinuses and the rest of the body.
