Skin Cancer Awareness Month

SunClouds

The sun is starting to shine and summer is in the air. But it is important to remember that with summer come more exposure and higher risks for damaging our skin. May is Skin Cancer Awareness month and it is a perfect time to learn more about what you can do to protect your skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. According to Skincancer.org, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. Here are some steps to help protect yourself and loved ones.

Get a full-body mole check yearly. It is always nice to have a physician look at changing moles or suspicious areas to catch skin cancer early. Always wear sunscreen, even when it is not sunny out. It’s important to protect yourself every month of the year. The sun can reach you through the clouds or even bounce off a snowy sidewalk.

Reapply, reapply, reapply! You can never use too much sunscreen. Try applying sunscreen a half hour prior to being exposed to the sun, to let it penetrate into the skin. Once in the sun, sunscreen should be applied every two hours and even more often, if swimming and enjoying outdoor activities. There is no such thing as waterproof or sweat-proof sunscreen. Sunscreen can wear off, so it’s important to read the sunscreen information for water-resistant and sweat-resistant sunscreens to see how long they will protect you.

When purchasing a sunscreen, always look for UVA and UVB broad spectrum coverage. These sunscreens can protect you against the burning rays and the aging rays of the sun.

SPF clothing, sunglasses, hats, and umbrellas can help you enjoy the outdoors but also help protect your skin.

We have all been waiting for the beautiful weather to come, so enjoy it! Just be smart about being in it!
